Four year old Belgian Shepard Kuno was handed the PDSA Dickin Medal for his bravery and devotion to his duty.
In 2019, during a military operation, Kuno charged through gunfire to tackle a gunman, breaking the deadlock and changing the course of attack – in turn allowing the mission to be finished as a success.
During the attack, he was wounded by bullets in both of his back legs, and had to be give life saving treatment bu his handler and medics in the back of a helicopter.
Kuno’s injuries were so severe that he required several surgeries before he was able enough to fly back to the UK. Part of his rear paws also had to be amputated to prevent life threathening infection.
Kuno is now thriving in his retirement, having become the first military dog to be fitted with prosthetic limbs.
